Description:
Green legs; distinctly larger than other green-legged shorebirds, with a dark, rather stout bill slightly upturned at tip. Upperparts grey and foreneck and underparts white in non-breeding plumage. In breeding plumage, foreneck and breast streaked, upperparts untidily streaked. Juvenile has dark-streaked upperparts with fine buff.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant through all the major waterways and lakes of Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 4200m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Usually pecks and probes in shallow water walking with steady pass, sometimes running with erratic changes of direction; when feeding on fish may forage socially in dense flocks of conspecifics or mixed with other stringiness. Chiefly feeds on insects and their larvae, especially beetles, but also crustaceans, annelids, molluscs, amphibians and small fish; reported also rodents.
